John Tenniel - Alice in Wonderland

Martin Gardner in The Annotated Alice points out that the main in the white paper hat is almost certainly Disraeli - Tenniel was famous for his political cartoons in Punch. More to the point here is that the drawing of Alice seems to be based on Millais' The First Sermon. It was a huge favourite of the Victorian's of the time, though here he substitutes a pocket book for the Bible. Lewis Carroll visited Millais, at least in 1864 when he mentions the picture in his diary for the 7th April.
